Darrell J. Powell, 95, of Ashland, NE, died January 21, 2019 at the Hospice House in Omaha, NE. He was born June 20, 1923 in Sterling, NE to Johnny and Margaret (Walker) Powell. Darrell graduated from Tecumseh High School in 1941.

He was inducted into the U.S. Army on February 12, 1943 and received his honorable discharge on December 18, 1945. Darrell was in the 1st Infantry and was part of the D-Day invasion at Omaha Beach, Normandy, France. Darrell was wounded on September 13, 1944. His decorations and citations include: Distinguished Unit Badge, Good Conduct Medal, Purple Heart and Bronze Service Arrowhead.

On March 30, 1947, he was married to Donna Johnson in Tecumseh, NE and they had two sons, Danny and Douglas. Darrell worked in the grain business for most of his life. He owned Powell Grain Company in Ashland from 1957-65 and through the years worked for Lincoln Grain Company and Wahoo CO-OP. Darrell was a member of First Christian Church, American Legion #129 and a past member of the Ashland Chamber of Commerce. He also served on the planning commission for Saunders County and the City of Ashland. Darrell was an avid fisherman and in his younger years enjoyed hunting and trapping.

He is survived by sons, Danny Powell of Ashland, NE and Doug (JoAnne) Powell of Loveland, CO; grandchildren, Anita (Nick) Plamann and Brian (Cassie) Powell; great-grandchildren, Emma and Jacob Powell; sister, Darlene Drake; many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by wife, Donna Powell; parents, Johnny and Margaret Powell; sister, Ruth Doeden; brother, Richard Powell.
