Duane Kent Tigges, age 74, died Saturday, July 28, 2018 at his home in Ashland, NE.  He was born on May 28, 1944 in Cherokee, IA to Ernest and Tora (Jensen) Tigges. He graduated from Sioux Valley High School in 1962 in Peterson/Linn Grove. Duane had a love for the outdoors and always tried to find ways to be out in it. He attended Gem City College in Quincy, IL where he learned to repair watches. In October of 1970 he was united in marriage to Audrey Broesder. They resided in Sibley, IA where Duane owned and operated the Tigges Jewelry Store. They have two children, Eric and Heidi Tigges. In 1986, he moved to Ashland, NE where he later met and celebrated the remainder of his life with Dorothy Herring.

In 1967, Duane enlisted in the United State Marine Corps and shortly after was deployed to Vietnam for 14 months. He later moved to Ashland, Nebraska where he joined the Nebraska National Guard at Camp Ashland, Nebraska. He was employed at the camp until his retirement as a Master Sergeant.

He had a passion for helping others and is remembered by friends and veterans as always putting them first, including his dear friend Angie. He also had a love for animals, especially his three cats, Ruby, Bootsie and Whiskers.

He excelled at his military career with many honors. Duane was a very decorated and devoted soldier who served his country for over 30 years. Some of his honors include: Army Achievement Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Army Reserve Component Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and a Vietnam Service Medal.

He is survived by his two children, Eric (Cindy) Tigges of Spencer, IA and Heidi (Jamie) Blochowitz of George, IA; and Ellen Hill (Joel and son Cody) of Lincoln, NE, Doris and Tim Deleski of Ashland, NE and Gene Herring (Courtney and son Chase) of Little Rock, AK and grandchildren, Paige (Zack) Clark of Little Rock, IA, Brady (Taylor) Blochowitz of Rushmore, MN, Colten and Trey Blochowitz of George, IA, Connor and Reid Tigges of Spencer, IA. Two great grandchildren, Ellie Clark and Weston Blochowitz. He is also survived by his sister, Mary Waltz of Hartley, IA. He was preceded in death by his mother, Tora and his father, Ernest of Peterson, IA and one older brother, Larry who passed in infancy.

Following the burial service in Peterson, IA on Sunday the American Legion Club of Peterson will conduct military honor rights.

    I cut Duane’s hair, I am so sad to see this news. He had the best sense of humor and was one of my favorite people to be around. Always in a good mood and never let the bad bring his spirits down. I will sincerely miss him and will remember him forever.
