Robert L. Vandeman, 80 of Ashland, NE, entered into rest on Thursday, March 20, 2014 at his home in Ashland, NE. He was born March 12, 1934 in Omaha, NE to Clarence and Eula (Wagner) Vandeman. Bob graduated from Ashland High School in 1952. He worked at the Mead Ordinance Plant until he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He served his country as an electrician in the Seabeeās 11th Battalion, serving in Guam and Kodiak, Alaska. After four years in the Navy, Bob came home to work for C.B. & Q. Railroad Eastern Division. While working in Burlington, IA, he met and married Linda Wolford on February 15, 1958. They have three sons and one daughter. The family moved to Ashland in 1962 and Bob started working for Thomas Bridge Gang with his brothers and father. After seven years of bridge work in Sarpy County, he started a career with Western Electric and worked there until he retired in 1998.
Bob was a family man that loved sports, fishing, and gardening. He lettered as a guard on the Ashland football team all four years of high school and he received honors from the Lincoln paper. He always had time for his family and he enjoyed his time with his grandchildren. He was a member of the American Legion Post #129 and VFW Post #9776.
He is survived by children, James Allen (Wilma) Vandeman of San Diego, CA, Kathryn Susan (Eric) Peterson of Larimore, ND, Jon Wesley Vandeman of Ashland, Kenneth Jeffrey (Virginia) Vandeman of Ashland; grandchildren, Tanya, Andrea, Jessica, Aaron, Sean, Sabrina, Tiffany, Melissa and Taylor; great-grandchildren, Hailey, Jaden, Vincent, Hunter, Dorian, Jacobi, Ryder, Liam, and Maci; brothers, Clarence (Judy) Vandeman, Fred Vandeman, Larry (Lena) Vandeman; ex-wife and caregiver, Linda Vandeman.
Preceded in death by parents, Clarence and Eula Vandeman; brother, Bill Vandeman; granddaughter, Jennifer Peterson.
