I was just talking to my Mom (Marjorie Sutter) in Lincoln and she mentioned that Richard had passed. I am sorry for your loss. My Mom and Dad lived next door to the Lloyd’s on Burlington many yrs ago. In fact, my Mom just told me that Mrs. Lloyd babysat my bros and sister when my Mom went to the hospital to have me. My Mom has many fond memories of the Lloyds. My deepest sympathy to all of your family.

My most sincere condolences to Aunt Mert, Gregg, Sheri and families. Here is a tribute honoring Uncle Richard, I hope it brings a comforting smile to know how much he meant to our entire Lloyd family.

    A Good Man.

About the best description that any man could hope to earn, and uncle Richard was that and more. Rich was the consummate family man, a pillar of his community, the patriarch of the Lloyd family for 30 years (carrying on so many of Grandpa Lloyd’s best traits), and he faithfully represented the Lloyd family by attending every family funeral in Kansas and Missouri. I admired and respected Rich very much.

He was a role model with high integrity and unquestioned character. He was a devoted husband of 61 years, a father who was very proud of the people his children grew to be, and a happy grandfather. He loved, was committed to and provided for his family. He was ingenious and industrious – a craftsman extraordinaire who especially enjoyed building things with Gregg. He was a hard worker who never expected anything he didn’t earn, and he always stood up for himself. As a veteran of the USAF, he fought for our country in the Korean War.

Rich lived life fully, including exercise and being active, having hobbies and starting a business. He laughed easily, knew how to have fun, and had some great stories! Growing up I always looked forward to getting to go to Greenwood, highlights of my youth that were always sure to create lasting memories. Of the many wonderful memories, here are some of my favorites involving Rich.

Watching the 1971 Nebraska – Oklahoma game on TV in Greenwood (so exciting and great finish, but I never had to pee so many times in three hours). Christmas Eves with great food, laughs and Rich and Gregg’s gag gifts for uncle Jerry. Running on the sand bars, fishing trotlines and finding morel mushrooms along the Platte River. “It’s root beer”…not, when he and Jerry tricked me into tasting a beer. Waking one morning to find everything covered with a half-inch coating of ice – perfect for riding the mini-bike and making sliding donuts in front of the house! Riding to Greenwood with Grandpa and Rich in the front seat and Gregg and me in the back, and pulling grandpa’s leg about how fast we could change a tire until he got so flustered “Oh! You can… you can… ”. Finding coupons for 28 pieces of pie for the International House of Pies at the Omaha Royals game – with Rich saying “Now you kids let me do the talking” and feeling like we pulled the biggest scam in history. Sky Diving; once – only to find out 22 years later that Gregg had talked each Rich and I into going by telling us the other one was going (“I can’t back out if the old man/young kid is going.”). Going to Nebraska football games and eating hotdogs at Memorial Stadium. Food and softball at family picnics in Greenwood, Havelock Park, Bethany Park and Holmes Lake. Going to Linoma Beach. Jumping of the high board at the Ashland CC pool. His beautiful, deep baritone signing voice. Hilarious stories such as the “exploding home brew” in the cellar with he and Jerry “rescuing” it by popping the tops and shooting it into the air while the other ran around catching it in a dish tub. Welding, machining and metalworking. Ford trucks, mini-bike, motorcycles, cars and “The Rod”.

Uncle Richard always asked how you were doing, and he sincerely cared. I am very proud to be part of the Lloyd family and so grateful for the example Rich set for my generation. Till we meet again, Rich, please give mom a big hug for me. ‘Bye, now.

    Love,

    Eric
