Janice L. Curtis was born on Dec. 16, 1943 to Gerald J. and Grace (Cowell) Curtis in Grand Island, Nebraska.  She passed away March 23, 2023.

Jan graduated from Ashland High School in 1962, furthering her education at UNL where she received her Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism and later a Montessori Infant/Toddler Directoress Certification from the college of St. Mary’s.

She was employed by the USDA Soil Conservation Service for approximately 15 years as an Information Specialist and Employee Development Specialist in Kentucky and Washington, DC.   After a short hiatus traveling the western US in her pickup camper, she enjoyed 8 years as a Montessori Infant/Toddler Directoress and later as a nanny for four young girls.  She retired from Dr. Leonard Health Care Products in 2018.   In her last career, her love of children took her to the YMCA’s Community Service Center at Pershing Elementary where she was “guardian of the gates” for the children’s after school program.

A true hobbyist, she enjoyed learning and teaching many different avenues of creativity.  While in Washington she learned to fly and owned her own airplane.

Jan is survived by her brothers William (Cheryle) Curtis, Kenneth (Jacqueline) Curtis, and sister Geraldine Hull, 8 nieces and nephews, and many great nieces and nephews; 2 step-brothers and numerous step-nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; Gerald and Grace Curtis, stepfather Fred Humann, brother-in-law Richard Hull and stepsisters Sherri Humann and Karen Wheelock.

This is sad news. I was a classmate at Ashland-Greenwood High School graduating in 1962. She was President. It was good to visit with her at class reunions including our 60th just last year. I will pray for her brothers, sister and their families. Roger Hammer

I was so sorry to hear about Jan’s passing. Remembering her most during our high school years, she was always bright, accepting of others and positive. Just a lovely person then–and I’m sure, all the rest of her life. I send my sincere condolences to her family.

I’m so sorry to hear of Jan’s passing. I have known her for over 20 years. We had many dinners and lots of art classes together over those years. She was a kind, generous and very creative person and a good friend. She will be missed.
