Melvin R. Cerny, 74 of Ashland, NE passed away Tuesday, April 9, 2019 at Lakeside Hospital in Omaha. He was born August 31, 1944 in Belleville, KS to Victor and Elsie (Polak) Cerny. He attended grade school in Narka, KS, graduated from Omaha South High School in 1962 and received a degree in Civil Engineering from UNO. He was an Army Veteran during the Vietnam War who entered on February 17, 1966 and was honorably discharged on October 4, 1968. Melvin was united in marriage to Linda Bielenberg on November 23, 1974 in Carter Lake, IA.
In 1973 Melvin co-founded Geotechnical Services Inc. and had offices in five states. He was the past President of the Ashland Youth Ball Association (AYBA) and helped organize fund raisers for the AYBA. He was a former board member of the Ashland Public School and an active member of the American Society of Foundation Engineers (ASFE). He was an avid Husker fan who followed the athletic programs, especially football, basketball and baseball. Melvin was always eager to help with computer problems and was often seen with a camera around his neck taking endless pictures at all family gatherings. He enjoyed his yearly trips to Missouri to buy fireworks for the 4th of July.
Melvin is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Linda Cerny; son, Martin Cerny of Ashland; brothers, Larry (Marian) Cerny of Geneva, NE, Dennis (Karen) Cerny of Marietta, GA; brothers-in-law, Richard (Retha) Bielenberg of Morrison, IL, Virgil (Kathy) Bielenberg of Storm Lake, IA, Ron (Sue) Bielenberg of Kearny, NE, Dale (Kate) Bielenberg of Norwalk, IA; sisters-in-law, Shirley Raszler of Papillion, NE, Lois Weiss of Omaha, NE, Pat Bielenberg of Ida Grove, IA; aunt, Wilma Cerny of Fairbury, NE
He was preceded in death by his parents, Victor and Elsie Cerny; parents-in-law, Irwin (Eva) Bielenberg,; brothers-in-law, Merle and Lyle Bielenberg, Aaron Rasler, Mike Marsh; sister-in-law Barb (Ronnie) Fritz.

Linda and family, I am so sorry to hear about the passing of Mel. I used to work for Mel at Geotechnical over 40 years ago. I learned so much from Mel, and he was wonderful to work for. My wife Jackie also worked part time for him, and enjoyed Mel as well. A truly wonderful man, and our thoughts and prayers are with you.
Mel was a special friend that I had in some classes at South High. Wil miss him.
We have lots of memories from the first days of the VFW and Mel bringing Martin to show him off and the enjoyable times playing cards our prayers are with you during this difficult time.
Bob and I were so saddened to learn of Mel’s passing. We admired him greatly and appreciate all he did to make Ashland a great place to live. Peace to your family.

Linda and Martin. Our hearts go out to you two at these trying times. As you know mel was a life long friend. We will miss him deeply as well. It is very hard to even write this with out shedding tears.

Linda, so sorry to hear of Mel’s passing. You were blessed to be married to a wonderful man and he was surely blessed to have you by his side all these years.
So sorry to hear of Mel’s passing . I knew of Mel through the years in Professional Engineering practice and several projects . Mel was an exemplary leader and mentor to many people in the Geotechical and Foundation Engineering ares. His service in Vietnam is honored . My thoughts and prayers are for his wife, Linda , and the family .
