American Legion #82 Auxiliary

Betty J. Sullivan, 91, of Wahoo, NE, died Friday, October 6, 2017 at the Saunders Care Center in Wahoo, NE.  She was born February 8, 1926 in Waukomis, OK to Sylvester and Marie (Lathers) Redington.  In 1945, Betty graduated from high school in Waukomis, OK.  Betty moved to Weston, NE in 1946, after she was married to Joseph J. Voboril and later they moved to Wahoo in 1959.  On February 14, 1981, she was married to John Sullivan at First Presbyterian Church in Wahoo, NE.

Betty was a member of the Presbyterian Church where she served as President of the Presbyterian Women of Wahoo.  During her 50 years in the American Legion Auxiliary she served as President in Weston, Wahoo and Ceresco, Saunders County President and District Seven President.  In the many years as member of the VFW Auxiliary, she served as President of Wahoo #4502 Auxiliary and Lincoln #131 Auxiliary, District 9 President and Department Chief of Staff.  She served as State President of the Military Order of Cooties and, in 1974, was honored to place a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington National Cemetery.  In 1992, Betty was the first woman to run and win a seat on the Wahoo City Council.  She also was a member of the Wahoo Eagles Auxiliary, Wahoo Historical Society, 8 and 40 Auxiliary, DAV Auxiliary and Ex. POW’s of Lincoln.

When living in Missouri, Betty continued to be very active volunteering.  She served as President of the Waldensian Presbyterian Women and was a member of the Purdy Lions Club and served as Secretary.  Betty and her husband John returned to Nebraska in 2004.

She is survived by sons, Joseph (Shelley) Voboril of Portland, OR and Jerry (Linda) Voboril of Wahoo; son-in-law, Terry Macholan of Papillion, NE; grandchildren, Joey (Adrienne) Voboril, Katie (Matthew Kahl) Voboril, Scott (Krystal) Macholan, Ross Macholan, Andrea (Jim) Beaver, Ashlee and Aubrey Voboril, Page Fritz, Whitney and T.J. Nordstrom; nephew, Tom Vanderpool of Wahoo; step-daughter, Laurel Mrozek of New Castle, PA.

She was preceded in death by husband, John Sullivan; daughter, Judy Macholan; two sisters and two brothers.

    On behalf of the Robert and Mary Laudenback family our deepest condolences go out to J. Vobs and all of Betty’s family. Betty was a good soul, fantastic bigger than life personality, Great sense of humor and always having a good day! She has joined a group of old friends and relatives and will live on in our memories.
