Donald F. Chvatal, 83 of Malmo, NE, entered into eternal rest on Thursday, May 16, 2013 at the Fremont Area Medical Center.  Don was born March 4, 1930 in Prague, NE to Martin and Mary (Ladenburger) Chvatal.  He attended District 75 country school and graduated from Wahoo High School in 1947.  After graduation, Don started farming on the home place near Malmo.  In 1951, Don was united in marriage to Norma Benal and to this union six children were born.  Don worked for over 26 years at the University of Nebraska Field Lab in Mead as a maintenance foreman and he also farmed most of his life.  Don and  his wife retired to their home in Malmo in 1985.

During Don’s lifetime he was active in several organizations.  He  was a member of the District 75 school board for 20 years, Malmo Fire Department and Fire Board for 45 years, Feeders Association for 35 years, Malmo Town Board for 20 years, Senior Citizens Board for 4 years, the Eagles Club for 40 years, a lifetime member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Colon, and a member of the Knights of Columbus.  Don was active with St. Wenceslaus School and Bishop Neumann High School.  He loved sports and always attended his children and grandchildren’s games.  In high school, Don set the 100 yard dash record and it was held for 10 years.  Don enjoyed gardening at the Quonset and finding a bargain at an auction.  He loved his Malmo coffee club and playing cards at the senior center.  Don was a hardworking farmer that will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

Don is survived by his wife of 61 years, Norma; children, Laurie Bier of Omaha, Jim (Diann) Chvatal of Wahoo, Kenny (Denise) Chvatal of Wahoo, Mike (Mariechen) Chvatal of Wahoo, Bob (Missy) Chvatal of Wahoo, Dave (Colleen) Chvatal of Malmo; 25 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; sister, Clayre Sabatka of Wahoo; several other family members and friends
