James “Jim” J. Svoboda, 73, of Wahoo, NE, entered into eternal rest on Saturday, July 27, 2019 at his home in Wahoo, NE.  He was born September 13, 1945 in Wahoo, NE to Milo E. and Mary Lucille (Woita) Svoboda.  He graduated from Wahoo High School and he attended mortuary school in Dallas, TX.  Jim served his country in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam Era until he was honorably discharged.  On October 19, 1973, Jim was united in marriage to Carlene Liermann at St. John the Apostle Catholic Church in Lincoln, NE.

Jim was a third generation funeral director for over 50 years at Svoboda Funeral Home working alongside his family.  He took over the family business after his father, Milo died in 1982.  Two years later, Jim purchased Marcy Mortuary in Ashland and continued operating the funeral homes until his retirement.

Jim was a member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus and the Nebraska Funeral Directors Association.  He served his community in many ways through the years volunteering countless hours.  He enjoyed fishing, spending time with family and attending his grandkids activities.

He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Carlene Svoboda; children, Jill (Jeff) Maly of Weston, NE, Trisha (Jonathan) Little of Lincoln, Mandy (David) Boehle of Lincoln and Tim (Jessi) Svoboda of Lincoln; 12 grandchildren; siblings, Tom (Marilyn) Svoboda of Wahoo, Jean (Walter) Paisley of Holy Cross, IA and Carol Svoboda of Lincoln; many other family members and friends.

Jim was a true servant to the community, not only in business but public service. Our land line phone history shows that Jim called our phone Friday afternoon at 1:35. He didn’t leave a message. Oh how I wish I knew what he wanted to talk to us about.

Jim & His family are in our thoughts. He was such a good friend to our family. Friends of my parents since childhood & remained so, visiting with them often as they now just lived a few house away from each other. He was always there for Lisa & I if we needed someone to check in with. And he’d take my nephew Joey fishing when he came to visit. He also took such loving care of all of us as our family & friends passed on. May he rest in Peace. Much Love – Rebecca (Kralik) & Tim Dowling

I’m shocked at Jim’s passing. My dad and mom (Joe and Blanche Boyles) thought so much of him and used the Svoboda Funeral Home for their burials even though they weren’t Catholic. I believe one of the daughters was working with him at one of the funerals. He was very kind and compassionate. I remember their Hardware store. We were also in the same grade.

It was our privilege to have Jim as a life-long friend. To my parents since they were kids. To my sister and I growing up. To my son when we would visit Wahoo over the past 20 years. We got to share in a bit of the kindness, calmness, caring, smile and laughter that was Jim. For that we are forever grateful and blessed. God speed Fisherman Jim (as he is known in our home). We send our love to all Jim’s family and friends.
