In care of the family for future designation

Neva “Jean” Kavan, 75, of Wahoo, NE, passed away Monday, November 27, 2023 at her home.

She was born October 11, 1948, in Lincoln, NE to George and Geneis (Minnick) Schafer.  She graduated from Lincoln High School.

Jean worked a variety of jobs throughout her life – whatever, whenever she could around raising her four rambunctious sons.  Jean enjoyed puzzles, ghost-hunting, and a good game of Canasta.  Most of all, Jean enjoyed spending time with her family and friends and often entertained them with her funny stories – some of which were actually true.  An oft-repeated favorite was of the time she attempted to get rid of a cricket in the basement by shooting it with a rifle.  She missed the cricket but got the washing machine.  We will never know another character like our crazy Granny and will miss her dearly.

She is survived by sons: Greg (Deb) Kavan of Wahoo; Chris (Kristi) Kavan of Mead, and Nick Kavan of Wahoo. Sister Jane Harrison (special friend Steve Scheiner) of Lincoln and sister-in-law Pat Schafer of Peoria, AZ.  Grandchildren Sam, Will, Eli, Katlyn, and Emma Kavan.  Nieces, nephews, and many beloved friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, infant daughter Becky, son Andy, brother Rick Schafer and brother-in-law Bernie Harrison.

Condolences for Neva “Jean” Kavan

39 years ago I was a brand-new bride and new parishioner in Weston. I showed up to work at a big parish event and didn’t know a soul. Jean came up to me, introduced herself, got to know me, and stayed by my side through the whole event, introducing me to people and showing mee the ropes…….I am forever grateful to her for that wonderful kindness. I try to pass that on to every new lady that joins our parish! A thoughtful, kind lady!

Jean was a kind hearted and very generous lady when we were kids at home on the farm and in our adult life. I remember talks and laughs that we shared thru out the years. Rest in Peace my friend.

Jean was a wonderful sister-in-law. She truly seemed like a real sister. Words cannot express her warmth and kindness and the great times we shared. My condolences to Jane and family and Jean’s boys Greg, Chris and Nick and their families. You will remain in my heart forever.

I had only gotten to know Jean only over past year. She was our number one fan every time my husband and I performed at the apartment building. She always encouraged me, and never missed an opportunity to be kind and supportive. And although our tastes in music were very different, she never missed a performance. The most important thing, however, one that we absolutely shared, was our faith. She was a very godly woman, and some of the most intense and meaningful conversations I have ever had regarding God and faith, were the conversations I had with Jean. I miss her terribly, but I know that I will see her again. And I know she will be waiting for me to sing for her again.
