St. John Nepomucene School or Bishop Neumann High School

Richard L. “Ogle” Virgil, 68, of Weston, NE entered into eternal rest on Saturday, December 16, 2023, in Weston. He was born May 4, 1955, in Lincoln, NE to Lloyd & Helen (Jirovsky) Virgil. He attended St. John Nepomucene School and graduated from Bishop Neumann High School in 1973. He was united in marriage to Teresa Gubbels on August 13, 1983, at St. Jane Frances de Chantal Catholic Church in Randolph, NE.

After Ogle graduated from High School he farmed at home, then started working for Scoular Elevator in Weston and Superior. He worked as a meat-cutter for 35 years starting at Pac-N-Save in Wahoo, NE, and retired in November 2023 from Hy-Vee in Fremont, NE. Ogle also worked as a painter with Dennis Tvrdy, and construction with Bob Sousek. Ogle was a 35-year veteran of the Weston Volunteer Fire Department serving as an EMT, secretary/treasurer, and past Fire Chief. He served on the Bishop Neumann School Board, St. John’s Men’s Club & Parish Council, as a co-chair for Neumann GALA, and was a past Village of Weston Board Member & Chairman.

Ogle especially enjoyed his many hobbies: fishing, hunting, gardening, cooking, baking, microbrewing, winemaking, golfing, crossword puzzles, and storm watching. He enjoyed building, construction, and taking care of all the house and garage projects that he and Teresa dreamed up. To relax, he would watch Svengoolie horror movies and listen to Polka music. Most of all, he loved to sit with “That Red Head”, spend time with his family and friends, share stories over a beer, and have a good laugh.

Richard is survived by his wife, Teresa Virgil; children, Lucas (Megan) Virgil, Jennifer Brothers, Michelle Virgil, Jacob Virgil; grandchildren, Brody & Brynn Virgil, Eviana & Braxton Brothers, Aubriella Benedict; mother, Helen Hedges; siblings, Marie (Paul) Aksamit, Lu (Craig) Vavak, Les Virgil, Roseann Virgil, Joe (Sue) Virgil, Doug (Jodi) Hedges; mother-in-law, Sharon Gubbels; brothers & sisters-in-law, Tami (Larry) Wilhelm, Lori Olson, Dan Gubbels, Tim (Marci) Gubbels, Brad (Michelle) Gubbels, Becky (Doug) Nordhues, Lisa (Mike) Herda, and Jean Hedges.

He was preceded in death by his father, Lloyd Virgil; stepfather, Adolph Hedges; brothers, Nicholas & Robert Hedges; father-in-law, Vernon Gubbels.

Helen, Theresa and family, I am so very sorry about Rick’s passing. Working with him when he was Mayor, I got to know him better. I always considered him a friend. When we came to Saturday evening mass I almost always got to visit with him for awhile. He will be sadly missed and warmly remembered.

To Helen, Teresa, and the family –
Ogle was one of the friendliest guys I’ve ever met. He made me feel welcome with the whole group even before I became a Tvrdy! His presence will definitely be missed by so many. Such a great loss! Holding you all close in our hearts and prayers. RIP Ogle.

We haven’t seen Ogle for many years, but we kept in touch, and whenever we spoke he lifted our spirits! He was an amazing man–smart, funny, kind–and he made a huge impact on those lucky enough to know him. We will miss him! We are thinking of you, Theresa, and the rest of the family, and will keep you and Ogle in our prayers.
